Four members of Hertfordshire 4x4 Response assisted BHC 4x4 Response at a call out in Caddington, Beds. A water main failure had cut off gas supplies to the village, electric fires and hot plates were made available to residents from the community centre. The response group transported some from Hitchin and then assisted in distributing to the housebound etc. Sounds like it was a long day. Self Deployment by Nick, Member HT25 after coming across a Road Traffic Collision between Stansed (Essex) and Cambridge. Two cars had collided head-on with a closing impact of around 100mph.  Nick placed his vehicle in a fend off position to protect the crash scene and used amber beacons to warn approaching traffic. He was able to administer aid to the drivers and stabilised a suspected spinal injury for one driver until such time as she was able to be cut from her vehicle by the fire service. Nick was responding in his own right but the vehicle lighting and equipment he carried as a member of 4x4 Response assisted in his actions. He was commended by all three emergency services for his prompt actions.

Contacted by East of England Ambulance Service Trust to assist a stranded Paramedic in Renhold, near Bedford. Jason, member HT02 responded and was able to transfer the Paramedic to Amptill Ambulance Station. Our first ever "live" deployment.

Whilst talking to the Ambulance Trust controller regarding the previous call, another Ambulance was reported stuck near Hemel Hempstead. Although once again we could have responded, during the call an Area Manager with 4x4 was located in Hemel who was able to assist.

Contacted by East of England Ambulance Service Trust to assist a stranded ambulance at Liddlington in Bedfordshire. Whilst talking to the controller the call was cancelled as a Trust Area Manager was attending in a 4x4. However he had to drive from Cheshunt whereas we could have deployed members from Bedfordshire in a much shorter time.
 

A09/01 Monday 2nd February 2009 (21.05 hours)
 
Following heavy snow overnight we were called on Monday 2nd by the East of England Ambulance Service Trust to see if we had any vehicles available to transport a Hospice Nurse to a patient in the community in Welwyn Garden City to administer essential treatment. After quickly establishing that we had at least six vehicles available, we were then called and the call cancelled as the Nurse had been able to get through. We were asked to remain on alert.

On Friday 30th January 2009 the Group was placed on standby by the East of England Ambulance Service Trust as a result of predicted snowfall over the coming weekend.
