History of the National 4x4 Response Network
Across the UK there are numerous 4x4 or Land Rover Clubs offering a service to their local community. Members of these clubs voluntarily use their vehicles to support the Emergency Services, Local Council Emergency Planning Departments and other volunteer organisation in times of poor weather, emergency or other times of need. Some have been active for many years, others are still forming.
The 4x4 Response Network is a
registered Charity No: 1126138
In 1999 the 4X4 Response Network was formed in Norfolk to provide local community support. One of its key aims was to promote the 4X4R concept across the country.
Through its website and attendance at shows information was passed and other 4x4R specific groups were formed across the UK. Since then several of these clubs have been in communication with each other sharing valuable information which assisted with the founding of new groups and the development of existing clubs.
In 2005 it was suggested that these links were developed into a more formal Association which could assist the development of the Volunteer 4x4 Response concept across the country. In 2006 the 4x4 Response Network was renamed Norfolk & Suffolk 4X4 Response and the ‘Network’ name was used to form a National identity.
Throughout 2006 a steering committee and several sub-committees, consisting of members from groups in Northern, Southern and Eastern England, Scotland and Wales, used the national web forum to discuss and establish the criteria for 4X4 Response Groups across the Nation. Originally the concept was to form an association of groups with formal membership requirements and standards along the lines of Association of Lowland Search & Rescue (ALSAR) or the Mountain Rescue Council (MRC).
It has become increasingly obvious that this will lead to a great deal of time and resource from volunteers who are already busy running their own local groups. As such a decision was made in November 2006 to realign the objectives of N4X4RN as a register of 4X4 Response Groups providing valuable information for User Services, neighbouring groups and individuals wishing to establish this valuable service in their local community.

The original concept is not lost and in 2008 moves started to put the Network on a more formal footing with a legal entity and charitable status. Below is a link to the national website where you can find more information about the network and other groups associated from across the country.
